We have seen this happen many times. The main reason for a leak at the base is a failed wax gasket between the floor and the toilet.
The most common leak we see with toilets is a broken Flapper or Flush Handle. The flapper is inside the toilet and can be blue, black, or yellow. It sits in the centre position at the bottom of the tank. The Flush handle is either on the side or on top, depending on the toilet model.
TIP: There are handles for specific brands. When you cross-brand buy, the result can be a failed handle quickly. Ask or read who the manufacturer is when buying a replacement handle.
The answer is by looking at the floor close to the toilet and the surrounding area. Can you bounce a little like the spongy floor at a playground? Is it moist/damp? Can you smell sewer gas? These are indications that the leak may be under the tile.
If your toilet is on a second floor, water stains or damp ceilings below are also an indication of hidden leaks.
Water is the biggest enemy to any home. Leaking can cause serious issues with walls, flooring and foundations.
If water isn't in the receptacle it needs to be, it is a threat to your home.
Flush Gordon.
Yes. There are many smaller projects for anyone interested in learning. Changing the Flapper or Full lever is a simple job for any DIY.
